The 38-year-old has been a free agent since the Baggies released him in the summer following relegation from the Premier League.

But having fielded interest from a number of clubs, including Hearts, he has decided to join Steven Gerrard’s ‘project’ north of the border.

And McAuley, who is older than his new manager, is delighted to sign a deal with a club so close to his own heart.

“It’s massive personally, my family and myself support the club,” he said. “The street I was born on (in Northern Ireland), the curbs are painted red white and blue so to get the opportunity to come and play at this famous club is amazing.

“Im delighted to be here and fell very honoured and privileged to be here. I hope I can bring experience, there’s a young group of players here, I want to help develop them with my knowledge and challenge them to play in the team.

“It’s a project here, speaking to the manager here in the last few weeks, that’s something I can bring to the project, helping players develop.”

McAuley made 227 appearances for the Baggies across seven seasons, scoring 17 goals.

Head coach Darren Moore was initially open to keeping him at The Hawthorns for this season but former technical consultant Giuliano Terraneo believed McAuley was too old.

His move to Rangers is subject to international clearance.
