SAM JOHNSTONE

A testing debut for Johnstone, who appeared to be wrong-footed by Josh Magennis's header and then got down slowly to Yanic Wildschut’s late winner. But he did save well from close range from Magennis. 5/10

ALLAN NYOM

The right-back looked more comfortable on the ball than usual and made some darting bursts forward in the second half. Had the highest pass completion rate in the game, but could have overlapped more. 6/10

KYLE BARTLEY

Probably Albion’s best defender, and was certainly their best in the air defensively. But there needs to be a better understanding between him and Ahmed Hegazi, because Albion look vulnerable to crosses into the box and he let Wildschut beat him to the ball for the winner. 6/10

AHMED HEGAZI

Crashed a header against the crossbar in injury time, and had two other chances, but looked shaky at the back, where Magennis had the beating of him in the first half. Improved after the break. 5/10

KIERAN GIBBS

Played a sloppy pass straight to Magennis early on and that set the tone for his performance. Lost possession too easily and failed to cut out crosses from his flank. 4/10

MATT PHILLIPS

Albion’s most consistent threat throughout, Phillips looked lively from the off. Willing to commit defenders and get to the byline, he also flashed a couple of shots just wide of the post. Could be an important player this season. 7/10

CHRIS BRUNT

The skipper was dropping deep to pick up possession but he needed a creative force ahead of him. Without that, he was limited to long diagonals, and they didn’t always come off. Set-pieces were typically dangerous. 5/10

JAKE LIVERMORE

He was strong and athletic in the central of midfield, and kept the ball ticking over, but he’s not the sort of player capable of unpicking the lock, and that’s what was needed here. Has improved under Moore though. 5/10

HARVEY BARNES

The two-footed winger scored an unstoppable goal that was made all by himself and also curled a cross onto Hegazi’s head with his other foot. Faded in the second half, when passes went awry, but it was still an impressive debut. 7/10

JAY RODRIGUEZ

A quiet game. Looked frustrated at times when he dropped deep to receive the ball and failed to get it, but apart from one chance for Barnes, he struggled to create anything when he did. Never looked like scoring. 5/10

HAL ROBSON-KANU

Battled hard and showed a couple of nice turns, but never looked sure about what to do once he’d stolen a yard from his man. Despite having a good pre-season he rarely troubled the Bolton goal. 5/10

Substitutes

Oliver Burke (Barnes 75)

Showed one promising run but failed to have the desired impact. 5/10
