West Brom re-sign Boaz Myhill weeks after releasing him

The 35-year-old has been handed a one-year contract and will return to the Baggies for a ninth season on the club's books.

Albion have already signed goalkeepers Sam Johnstone and Jonathan Bond this summer having sold Ben Foster to Watford and released Myhill.

The Baggies were hoping to add Sheffield United’s Simon Moore to their ranks as a third shot-stopper but the keeper’s wage demands proved too much.

A deal could not be struck and Moore signed a new contract with the Blades instead.

However, goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler is keen to have three options in goal next season and went back on the hunt for another keeper.

Myhill has been training at the club’s Palm training ground in Walsall since he was released towards the end of June, and he impressed Cutler, giving him cause for a rethink.

“I’m happy to sign,” said Myhill. “I’ve had to go through the process. I’ve had to show that I was hungry to be here.

“I’ve had to show humility to come here every day without a contract. I’ve had to show that I’m still a good keeper and that’s why we’re here now.

“I’m happy to help in whatever way I can. I’ve obviously played at this level. In the last two teams I was involved with in the Championship we’ve finished third so I know I am a good keeper in this league.

“I have spoken to Sam and ‘Bondy’ - they’re different characters to each other and to me and I think Neil (Cutler) was keen to add my experience in that mix.

“But I also accept that the club needed to move away from a lot go older players across the board. I’m pleased to have signed.”

Having brought in two 25-year-old keepers, Cutler turned backed to Myhill to offer some experience in his goalkeeping ranks.

“Bo has come back fit and sharp,” said Cutler. “His experience around a young group has been first class and we felt it was good to keep a senior member around the squad.

“He’s been training with us all summer and trained very well. Let’s not forget that we have a guy here who’s been there and done it. Whenever he has been called on has done a great job for us.

“He’s also a very positive person in the changing room which is important as well and makes a good impact on the group.

“We’ve got a really touch battle ahead of us and Bo’s great experience is going to be invaluable. He has excellent experience of the Championship with Hull and Birmingham.”

The Baggies are hoping to find an EFL Club to loan Alex Palmer to this season.
