West Brom close in on new assistant head coach

Albion hope to announce their new assistant head coach early this week after holding productive talks with Belgium coach Graeme Jones.

Albion have held talks with Graeme Jones.

Jones, who played alongside Baggies boss Darren Moore at Doncaster Rovers, has been Roberto Martinez's assistant for over a decade.

An experienced number two, he joined up with Martinez at Swansea in 2007 before following him to Wigan Athletic, Everton, and then Belgium.

Moore is keen to add the 48-year-old to his backroom staff because he believes the former striker will complement his own defensive experience by helping his side's attacking patterns.

When Moore was appointed head coach back in May, he stated he had someone in mind for his number two.

But he has been forced to wait for Jones thanks to Belgium's run in the World Cup that saw them finish third.

Jones has also been offered a new contract with Belgium.

Moore has been leaning on former Bradford City team-mate Wayne Jacobs in pre-season.

Jacobs, who helped Moore towards the end of last season, is expected to officially join his team as first team coach before the Championship season starts.

James Shan has already been promoted to first team coach from the under-23s and Neil Cutler has stayed on as goalkeeping coach.

The Baggies are also due to announce their fourth signing of the summer today after James McClean's £5million exit to Stoke was confirmed last night.

Albion are bringing in a new recruit who can play on the left wing and also hope to add a third goalkeeper to their ranks this week.

The club are in talks with Sheffield United over Simon Moore, and with No.1 Sam Johnstone currently out with a groin strain, the Baggies are keen to tie up a deal soon.

Meanwhile, a swap deal with Newcastle that would see Salomon Rondon heading north and Dwight Gayle come to The Hawthorns has been mooted in talks between the two clubs.

But talks did not progress far and as it stands, nothing is close to being agreed.

Albion's new assistant could be installed in time to visit Barnsley with the team tomorrow night.

Craig Dawson is expected to play at Oakwell, featuring for the first time since he refused to go to Portugal for a pre-season training camp and handed in a transfer request.
