The 64-year-old was brought in on a temporary basis in April to replace sacked recruitment chief Nick Hammond.

Although the Baggies are on the hunt for a permanent technical director, the search is still still in its early stages, and it has now been agreed that Terraneo will stay at the club until September.

The Italian is now set to play a leading role in the club’s trading this summer following relegation from the Premier League.

“He is here until September,” confirmed chief executive Mark Jenkins. “Clearly the owners saw that the last 12 months have not been successful, they wanted to make some changes.

“They are aware that appointing a sporting director, technical director, call it want you want, is not easy because there is not a plethora of them around in the industry.

“So as temporary measure they put Giuliano in to assist. We’re still at the early stages (of the search).”

Terraneo was a left-field appointment in April and was brought in by Albion’s Chinese owners.

The experienced Italian has held various recruitment roles at Monza, Lazio, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahce – and last worked in football for the Turkish club in 2016.

The former goalkeeper flew to Guangzhou with Jenkins last week to speak to owner Guochuan Lai about the summer ahead.

They decided to appoint Darren Moore as head coach and leave Terraneo in place as a temporary technical consultant.

Jenkins has helped the club win promotion back to the Premier League on three occasions in the past when Jeremy Peace was owner.

He said keeping most of the squad together was crucial to those previous promotions – although he thinks it could be different this time around.

“I have had conversations with Darren about the squad but it is still early days,” added Jenkins. “One of the successful things in the past when the club has been relegated we have always held the team together and gone back. That has been a key factor.

“This time we have been in the Premier League for eight years so it is going to be different. But I am sure there will just be some small changes.”
