The 35-year-old defender left the Baggies last summer after nine seasons at the club, and returned home to Sweden to finish his playing career.

On Thursday, his team Djurgarden beat Allsvenskan champions and 14-time cup winners Malmo 3-0 in the Swedish Cup final.

Olsson, who played the full 90 minutes, then lifted the trophy as captain before expressing ‘joy’ at his first major honour.

“This means a lot to me,” he told Swedish press afterwards.”Now I have a title and hopefully will get more before I hang up my boots.

“It's just fun and it's fun to share this with everyone in the club.

“You saw how much this meant for Bosse (Andersson, sports manager) and Özcan (Melkemichel, coach) who had a hard time, especially in the media, at the end.

“This makes it worth moving home. I came home to a club that wants to fight for titles and now we have taken one.

“It is clear that Allsvenskan gets higher and I would also like to win sometime. But this is a receipt that you did something right after you got home.”

Olsson joined Albion in the summer of 2008, shortly after the Baggies had won the Championship.
