West Brom v Liverpool preview - Unbeaten Albion out to shock Klopp again

Albion have already played Liverpool twice this season, and somewhat remarkably for a team adrift at the bottom, they are unbeaten.

A battling goalless draw at Anfield in the league last December was built on the following month with a stunning 3-2 victory in the FA Cup fourth round that proved to be Alan Pardew’s finest hour for the Baggies.

Tottenham and Manchester United are the only other teams Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to beat in a stunning season that has seen them score 121 goals in all competitions.

Albion are rejuvenated under Darren Moore, particularly after last weekend’s shock 1-0 victory over United at Old Trafford.

Organised and committed, they have flourished under clear instructions from the caretaker boss in his first two games in charge and picked up four points so far, albeit against poor opposition.

The Hawthorns will be rocking for one of their own, who has managed to somehow unify the club at the end of a nightmare season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are destined to have Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final with Roma in the back of their minds.

Chelsea are 10 points back, a top-four place in the league is almost guaranteed. This competition is not their priority.

Victory against these distracted Reds would keep alive the impossible dream for at least a week longer, and move the Baggies within six points of Swansea ahead of the Swans’ Sunday fixture with the newly-crowned champions.

But Moore is still refusing to get dragged into talk of miracles and the greatest of great escapes.

“I’m really not focusing on the position in the league,” he said. “Honestly, all we’re focusing on is the next game.

“We just take one game at a time. I know it’s an old cliche but it really is that.

“It’s Liverpool next which is another tough game. All the Premier League games are tough no matter who you face.

“They’re all tough in their own right. But you can only plan and prepare one game at a time.

“We’ll get back into training and get some more hard work done in preparation.”

Moore is expected to name an unchanged XI for the second successive week after his side’s heroics at Old Trafford.

Jonny Evans and Nacer Chadli are available this weekend, but the argument for playing them has diminished.

Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi have been the centre-back pairing in three of Albion’s four league wins this season and there is a balance to the team with the in-form Jay Rodriguez in the hole.

Daniel Sturridge is ineligible against his parent club, but Hal Robson-Kanu is available following a period out with concussion.

Relegation can be confirmed this weekend. If Albion lose and Swansea avoid defeat at Manchester City, the dreaded R will be affixed to the table.

But under Moore, it feels like there is a possibility the dream could be extended at least one week further...

Opposition dangerman - Mohamed Salah

Who else? The Egyptian is having the sort of season that wins you the Ballon d’Or, or at least puts you in the conversation. Thirty goals in the league, 40 in all competitions, his ability to conjure up goals when Liverpool need them most is incredible. But, he’s been kept quiet by Ahmed Hegazi twice already this season.

Albion key man - Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez is Albion’s in-form player with three goals in his last four games. He also has pedigree against Liverpool after his brace at Anfield in January. The Baggies' most threatening player in front of goal, he offers their best chance of scoring.

Memory Lane

Fifty years ago this month, Albion beat Liverpool 2-1 at Maine Road in a second replay to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. Jeff Astle and Clive Clark scored and the Baggies went on to lift the trophy.
