The Baggies have launched an internal investigation into the actions of Jonny Evans, Jake Livermore, Gareth Barry and Boaz Myhill, and that is expected to run for at least a fortnight.

But the disgraced four, who publicly apologised for breaking Alan Pardew’s curfew last week, are set to be slapped with the maximum fine of two weeks wages.

That would total an estimated £480,000, and comes after the Spanish authorities dropped the case against them.

The players and their representatives will be interviewed by members of the Albion board over the next two weeks as they try and get an understanding of what exactly took place that night.

It has been alleged that the four players in question asked their taxi driver to fetch their McDonald’s order at 5.30am before driving back to the hotel and leaving the driver at the fast-food restaurant.

The maximum fine clubs impose on their players is two weeks’ wages because the Professional Footballer’s Association will not sanction any higher.

In 2011, the PFA forced Manchester City to halve a four-week wages fine they dished out to Carlos Tevez after he was found guilty of five separate breaches of contract.
