The Baggies have emerged as front-runners for Sturridge’s services until the end of the season despite interest from Inter Milan, Roma, Sevilla and Newcastle.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to let the 28-year-old leave on loan and Sturridge is eager to find first-team football in order to boost his chances of going to the World Cup with England this summer.

It’s believe the Reds want the Baggies to pay for all of Sturridge’s salary, which is £120,000 a week.

Albion were previously hampered by the short term cost control aspect of Financial Fair Play, which stops them from adding another large salary on their wage bill.

But it's believed they have skirted around this problem by paying Liverpool a £1.5million loan fee up front instead of putting Sturridge on their books.

The Baggies had reportedly made a £16m bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney, but it appears they have now turned their attention to England striker.

Albion announced their first signing of the window today when they brought Egyptian defender Ali Gabr in on loan from Zamalek.

Elsewhere, former Baggies striker Brown Ideye has joined Malaga.
