The 19-year-old, who is currently on loan at League Two Exeter City with Albion full-back Kane Wilson, is now under contract until the summer of 2020.

Like all of the youngsters out on loan in the first half of the season, Edwards returned to the Palm training ground for a spell in January to allow head coach Alan Pardew to take a look at him.

He was, like Wilson, loaned back to Exeter for the second half of the season and has now been rewarded with a new deal.

Technical director Nick Hammond said: “Kyle has progressed through our age groups and has developed further as a player during his time on loan.

“Developing players so they can progress to our first team remains a hugely important part of our long-term plan.

“Kyle is talented and we believe with the right support, and plenty of hard work on his part, he will continue to develop and fulfil his potential."

Edwards has made 13 appearances for the Grecians this season and scored one goal, which came in the Checkatrade Trophy.
