West Brom 0 Everton 0 - Albion player ratings

Albion dominated Everton on Boxing Day but were unable to find the net and the game finished goalless. Here, we rate the players.

It was a Boxing Day to forget for Salomon Rondon. (AMA)

Ben Foster

Wasn't tested until the last few minutes when he made an important double save to stop Oumar Niasse from unfairly taking all three points back to Merseyside. Did well to stay alive to the possibility on a cold winter's day. 6/10

Craig Dawson

An impressive return from injury for the reliable defender. Looked more solid defensively than Allan Nyom and helped Matt Phillips threaten down the right wing. Won a match-high ten headers and nearly scored when he leapt into Phillips's cross but the ball cannoned of his face and went over. Also rode his luck when he put his arm across a face moments after getting booked for exactly the same offence. 6/10

Jonny Evans

Rarely troubled by Everton's limp front-line and kept them in check with ease alongside Ahmed Hegazi. 6/10

Ahmed Hegazi

Like Evans, he never seemed too worried by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and turned Everton's players on the byline expertly a couple of times. 7/10

Kieran Gibbs

Struck up a good partnership with Chris Brunt down the left flank. The winger drops back naturally, allowing Gibbs to bomb on and overlap. It worked particularly well in the first half, although Everton were more alive to it after the break. Scuffed a shot into the ground near the end. 7/10

Matt Phillips

Albion have pace and variety in their attacking play when Phillips is playing. Was unafraid to run at Cuco Martina and put in several dangerous balls into the box. Keeping him fit will be key to the rest of the season. 7/10

Gareth Barry

Everton fans don't need to be convinced about Barry's abilities, but he put in a performance to do so anyway. Ran the midfield battle from first to last minute, won possession back high up the pitch in determined fashion, and then used the ball expertly and efficiently. He was inconsistent at first, but under Pardew, he's started to play like the consummate midfielder Everton enjoyed. 8/10

Jake Livermore

Another functional if somewhat uninspiring performance. Didn't do much wrong, but was overshadowed by the rest of the midfield. 6/10

Chris Brunt

More than a decade after he signed, he's still an integral part of this team, and still one of it's best creative forces. Always looking for the ball, always trying to play it forward, always posing questions of the opposition. Slipped Rondon through in the second half, and even though he turned away in frustration when the striker sliced the shot, he clapped him for rolling Mason Holgate. Brunt seems to be buying into Pardew's positivity, and just like last season, is proving to be an indispensable member of the line-up. 8/10

Jay Rodriguez

Started really brightly. Whipped in a dangerous cross for Rondon from the byline that his strike-partner should have tucked away and was also pinging cross-field balls in an impressive first half. But he struggled to make as much of a difference after Rondon limped off, and only managed to flash one header wide of the post. 6/10

Salomon Rondon

Could, and arguably should, have had a hat-trick. The first miss after five minutes was the worst, but later in the half if he'd realised where the ball was after a free-kick bounced off Evans's head he would have had a tap-in. In the second half, he should have scored when he rolled Holgate but instead shanked his effort into the Birmingham Road End and injured himself in the process. It epitomised his afternoon - but at least he was getting into the positions. 4/10

Substitutes

Hal Robson-Kanu (for Rondon 52)

Struggled to threaten the goal. 5/10

Grzegorz Krychowiak (for Livermore 69)

Has a bad habit of giving the ball away in his own half. 5/10

James McClean (for Phillips 88)

Created a chance after a strong burst inside and whipped in a dangerous cross. 6/10
