The 20-year-old winger is Albion’s second most expensive player of all time behind £18m man Nacer Chadli, and he knows it’s a compliment the club were willing to pay so much for him in the summer.

But Burke, who could return from injury against Manchester City this weekend, is refusing to let it put pressure on him.

Aware of how market value has sky-rocketed recently, it’s not something he thinks about on a daily basis.

“I totally forget about that and don’t focus on that,” he said. “It’s not really good to wake up and be like ‘I’m worth this or they’ve paid this for me’.

“There’s transfers out there that have gone wild. When you look at Neymar, it’s like nothing.

“Obviously it’s a great thing and it’s a privilege, but I don’t really think about it.

“I just concentrate on playing football. I’m still a young kid, excited to play and train every day.

“I have a great family and some great friends that keep me grounded and focused which is the main thing.”

The Nottingham Forest academy product spent a season in Germany with RB Leipzig before joining the Baggies this summer.

It is the second time Burke has been sold for a large fee because Leipzig bought him for £13m. But his career at The Hawthorns has got off to a stuttering start thanks to a troubling hamstring injury.

“Of course, my aim is to be in the starting XI,” he said. “The injury has held me back a little bit.

"But when I slowly progress and get into it and get used to my team I’m sure I’ll be in there and back to my usual ways and enjoying my football.”

Burke was nearly fit before the international break and captained Scotland under-21s twice before tweaking his hamstring again. But now he feels back to full fitness.

“I feel I’m about there,” he said. “I’ve had some very good sessions out on the grass. I’ve tested it and it feels fine.

“It’s just one of those injuries you have to be careful of and not rush yourself back because it will just get worse.”

Burke is a powerful and pacy winger with a top speed over 35km per hour, which he says makes it more difficult to recover from muscle strains.

“Yeah the way I play, to get an injury like that almost sets me back a little bit longer than a normal player that’s not so quick and doesn’t use pace as much,” he said.

“I’ve just got to stay focused, get myself ready and be in the best shape I possibly can and I’m doing that now.”
