West Brom keeper crisis: Boaz Myhill has minor hamstring strain but Ben Foster making encouraging progress

Albion may be forced to turn to 21-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Alex Palmer this weekend after the club’s medical team diagnosed Boaz Myhill’s injury as a minor hamstring strain.

Myhill was injured in a collision with Leicester striker Jamie Vardy on Monday night but the stand-in keeper initially thought he had just picked up a dead leg.

However, he was assessed yesterday, and is now a doubt for this weekend after being found to have strained his hamstring.

The club are optimistic that Myhill will be available because it is not a serious strain, but it is a concerning turn of events after Baggies No.1 Ben Foster tweaked his knee playing in the back garden with his son.

Tony Pulis described Foster’s injury as an ‘enormous worry’ after the Leicester game because of his history with cruciate knee problems.

Neither Foster nor Myhill have been ruled out of Saturday’s game with Southampton yet, and it’s understood Foster’s progress has been encouraging, but there is a possibility neither will be available at St. Mary’s.

That would force Pulis to give Palmer his competitive debut for the first team.

An academy product who has been at the club since he was 15, he played four times for England Under-16s.

He made 11 appearances on loan at Kidderminster Harriers in the National League back in 2015 but spent last season playing for Albion’s under-23s.

Oliver Burke faces a late fitness test on his recurring hamstring problem that ruled him out of Monday’s trip to Leicester.

His injury is not thought to be serious and the club hope it won’t hold him back much longer.

Burke is yet to start a game for the Baggies since joining the club for £15m in the summer from RB Leipzig.
