Albion Outlook: West Brom fans have their say on the transfer window

Each week, we ask Albion fans for their verdict on the last seven days. This week's edition is the first one after the transfer window shut and that topic dominates proceedings. If you'd like to contribute, email Baggies reporter Matt Wilson on matt.wilson@expressandstar.co.uk

It was quite nice sitting back on transfer deadline day safe in the knowledge that we had already assembled a tasty looking squad and that we wouldn’t be scratching around in desperation to bring in much needed additions!

However, the new signings now bring with them added impetus on Pulis to start implementing a more aesthetically pleasing brand of football. I’m not for one minute suggesting Pulis goes full on ‘Guardiola’ and abandons his routines on set piece efficiency for possession domination drills, but it’s no secret that the fans are crying out for more attacking intent from the team and with the signings he’s made this window, he definitely now has the tools available to him to try and achieve that.

I’ve felt the criticism aimed at Pulis has been somewhat unfair in the past as he’s always had a small squad to work with and hasn’t had that many players who possess a genuine attacking threat. With the arrival though of Gibbs, Krychowiak, Burke and Rodriguez we now have four more players within the team who can contribute going forward. Once those players are integrated, there is no excuse for not taking the game to our opponents, especially against those around and below us.

Now the transfer window has closed we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief! Having recruited new players who will undoubtedly provide us with a wealth of quality and experience we have also managed to pull off our best bit of transfer business by holding on to prize asset Jonny Evans. There was plenty of speculation he would joinn Manchester City. Despite bids being made they were rejected and Evans will line up in the blue and white stripes of the Albion for at least a while longer.

What impressed me most about the whole situation was the attitude and professionalism of the Northern Irishman. Did he complain? No. Did he cause any issues within the club or amongst the staff? No. It is unfathomable to think his head wasn’t turned in some way by the possibility of joining one of the best clubs in the world but despite the move not materialising, Evans has remained calm, composed and respectful. A lot of players of other clubs could learn a lot from.

I don’t think we could have asked for a better summer.

Not only did we execute the best transfer window of any club in the Premier League when you take into account value and squad strengthening, but we held onto Jonny Evans, brought Gary Megson back into the fold and are undefeated after three games.

But something else is happening, something we haven’t seen in a long time. The name West Bromwich Albion is very firmly back on the map. Players of incredible talent have made a conscious decision to join an ‘ambitious club’ in the words of Grzegorz Krychowiak, who could have been playing Champions League football at PSG or any other club from the continent.

Oliver Burke, one of the most exciting talents in British football, came to the same decision. And Kieran Gibbs, an England full-back, joined us and said he hoped the move would improve certain parts of his game. We also held off the advances of Manchester City as they publicly courted our captain.

If this wasn’t enough, the club also loaned out 12 youngsters, such is the quality and depth of the academy. I really believe we will look back on this summer in years to come as a watershed moment. The club and staff deserve enormous credit and should be congratulated. Exciting times ahead.

Wow, what a window. Well done to everyone involved and associated with the Albion on finally being pro-active enough to take advantage of a great spine at the club. I'd go as far as to say that we were one striker away from having the perfect window. Personally for me the best signing of the window is the player we managed to keep, Evans is integral to everything we are and is easily the best player I have seen down the Albion in 30 years of going. Whilst I wouldn't have begrudged him a move to a top four team, the fact that we stood firm and his attitude throughout means that till January at least, he'll still be a Baggie!

What this does do now is bring into the spotlight Albion's style of play. The excuses – very valid ones I might add – that the small squad impacted on the style we could play are fast disappearing. As long as the new boys hit the ground running we have quality throughout and reserves that can make a difference. Over to you Tony!

It just goes to show, we should never judge how the window has gone until the end. When we kicked off our season against Bournemouth, the fans around where I sit were full of trepidation for the new season. Talk of a painfully thin squad, compounded by the apparent interest in our best player meant most fans were looking nervously over their shoulders and a long season of struggle.

Fast forward to 11pm on September, 1, and everything in the Albion garden looks a lot rosier. We managed to keep hold of Jonny Evans, for my money the best centre half we have had in 25 years. We’ve signed an established Polish international in his prime from a European super power, a 27-year-old England international left back, (yes, left back), and what will be the Premier League’s record appearance maker in the next couple of weeks.

Add to that the pace and youth of Oliver Burke, along with Hegazi and Rodriguez, no one can argue that we are much stronger than we were last season. The one area that I hope is addressed is integrating Chadli back into the squad, as the No.10 position is the one area where we are light.
