Manchester City, Arsenal, and Leicester were all interested in the 29-year-old during the transfer window but Evans remained at the Baggies because no club matched the board’s £30m price-tag.

Despite reports claiming he was keen to join City, the Northern Irishman insists he is looking forward to returning to training and getting back into a normal routine.

He left for international duty on ‘good terms’ with Williams and Pulis, but is still planning to speak to them when he returns to reassure them that his mind is focused on the Baggies.

“I don’t really know much of what went on because I’ve been away on international duty,” he said. “You try to focus on that when you’re in a hotel, but when I get back I’m sure I will have a chat with the chairman and the manager.

“Before I left we’d said, ‘If something happens, it happens, if it doesn’t we’ll just get on with it’.

“As a player you don’t really know what’s going on a lot of the time and a lot of things are word of mouth.

“We’re not involved in that process but everything was left on good terms because it was a hypothetical situation. I just want to get on with what I was doing and see what happens.

"I’m a West Brom player and I’m the captain. I spoke about that in my programme notes last week and I’ll be looking forward to going back and seeing the lads.”

Evans has missed Albion’s first four games of the season with a hamstring injury but he played 90 minutes in Northern Ireland’s 3-0 win over San Marino on Friday and is set to feature against the Czech Republic in Belfast on Monday.

He is expected to be available for Albion’s trip to Brighton on Saturday after coming through the San Marino win without any complications.

“It was good for me, it came at the right time for me, especially with my injury and it was good to get through the 90 minutes,” he said.

And the build-up to the game with Northern Ireland was the perfect distraction to all the speculation over his future.

“That’s one of the great things about football - when there are other things going on, it makes you focus on something and the game takes your mind of other things,” he said.
