The 28-year-old striker had one year left on his current two-year deal, but has now agreed to an extension, keeping him at the Baggies beyond next summer.

Robson-Kanu’s salary is being increased after exceeding expectations last season following his deadline day arrival on a free transfer to bolster a threadbare strike force.

Although he was limited to substitute appearances during the first half of the season, he scored the winner on his full Albion debut away at Southampton on New Year’s Eve. He also scored a crucial goal in the 3-1 home win over Arsenal in March.

Robson-Kanu’s work ethic and attitude impressed Baggies boss Tony Pulis throughout the season, and in April, the Wales international forced his way into the starting line-up with usual first choice striker Salomon Rondon misfiring.

The former Reading man picked up a hamstring injury soon after, but returned towards the end of the season and scored a consolation goal at Manchester City, his third of the season.

“He’s been disappointed he’s not been playing,” said Pulis, a few months ago. “He’s made me aware of that every training session.

“But he’s been first class and when we win games there’s no one happier than him. He’s been a real stalwart in respect of his experience and character.”

Although the Baggies have signed Jay Rodriguez in a £12million deal rising to a potential £15m, Pulis is planning to use the former Southampton forward on the left wing and in behind the striker, as well as up top.

Albion’s head coach sees Robson-Kanu, who can also play left wing if needed, as a suitable back up to Rondon to Rodriguez.

He was forced to withdraw from international duty in June with a knee injury but has joined the squad in Austria this week and is expected to be fit for the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Albion remain in talks with ever-present defender Craig Dawson over a new long-term contract.

The 27-year-old’s current deal expires in 12 months and he is expected to sign a new one this summer.

Albion's home game with Stoke has been moved to Sunday, August 27, and their trip to Arsenal is now on Monday, September 25. Both games are live on Sky.
