The 45-year-old is currently in charge of Aberdeen, who are seeking £1million of compensation from the Black Cats.

McInnes, who started his managerial career at St Johnstone, guided the Dons to second in the Scottish Premiership last season,

After getting St Johnstone promoted, he joined Bristol City in 2011 and saved them relegation, but was then sacked in January 2013 when the club was bottom of the Championship.

But now Sunderland are keen to give him another crack at England's second tier after fellow Scot David Moyes resigned following relegation.
