MacAnthony claimed the £1 was put in the deal because former owner Jeremy Peace 'likes to win', but Albion said it was merely a formality to ensure they received the agreed percentage if Nabi is sold on.

Aston-born Nabi joined the Baggies aged eight and rose through the ranks before being named Young Player of the Year in the 2014/15 season.

There were high hopes for the young striker and at the start of the next campaign he was sent on loan to Indian Super League side Delhi Dynamos.

However, he was sold to Posh for an undisclosed fee in January 2016 shortly after his return. Nabi has struggled at the League One side, and has only made two appearances in the league this season.

And when asked on Twitter how much he cost, MacAnthony said: “£1 pound officially I think as West From (sic) former owner likes to win when doing transfer deals lol even on free transfers.”

However, Albion’s legal counsel Simon Carrington said: “Most contracts only need to contain two elements to be legally valid.

“All parties must be in agreement after an offer has been made by one party and accepted by the other.

“Something of value must be exchanged - such as cash, services, or goods or a promise to exchange such an item, for something else of value.

"The £1 negates any uncertainty that the contract may or may not have come into being at the date it is signed, notwithstanding whether there is any future payment made by Peterborough should Adil be sold on.”
