Rondon extended his barren spell for the Baggies to 17 games.

The £12million striker hasn’t netted since a hat-trick of headers against Swansea almost four months ago and has only scored in five games out of 34 this season.

And the Baggies are struggling to find the net themselves after firing their third blank in a row at home to Southampton on Saturday in a frustrating 1-0 defeat.

It means Pulis’s side have failed to score in five of their last six games, and the head coach is growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of finishing.

But he was grateful to those who were still supporting Rondon. “Salomon is going through a bad time but I think the supporters have been fantastic with him,” said Pulis. “It’s lovely to see because he’s not having the best of times but the supporters have stuck with him.”

Although Albion’s head coach criticised his side’s composure in front of goal, he defended their performances over the past week and highlighted the fact the Baggies were creating chances. “We’ve had nearly 40 shots on goal in two games,” said Pulis. “We’ve got to hit the target and be more clinical in front of goal.

“Southampton are a good side and I thought they created some good chances and good opportunities themselves but last 20-25 minutes I thought we really took over the game.

“That’s when you need that little bit of composure to put the ball in the back of the net.

“The chances are dropping to technically some of our best players. Chadli’s effort first half where he slashes at it. He’s better than that and then you’ve got Matty Phillips.

“He can have a touch and tries to hit it first time and I think if he’d been on top form and not had the injury, with that confidence that he’s got, he’d have had a touch and side-footed it into the net. Nyom’s chance, Jonny Evans’s chance at the end and the keeper makes a great save off Dawson. There’s six or seven chances there that you expect us to score from.”
