Tony Pulis taking West Brom to finishing school this week

Tony Pulis is taking his players to finishing school this week after growing increasingly frustrated with their wastefulness in front of goal.

Albion have failed to score in five of their last six games, but the Baggies boss believes his side are creating enough chances.

They had 17 shots against Southampton but just six hit the target, while only two of their 18 shots at Vicarage Road gave Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes anything to do.

Although Pulis remains pleased with his team’s overall performance this season, he is now focusing his efforts on shooting practice.

“If the keeper is making save after save after save I will accept that,” said Pulis. “But to be missing the target like we were missing the target is something we have to improve on.”

Albion still need six points to break the club’s record points tally in the Premier League, and their iron grip on eighth place is starting to slip after four defeats in six.

But Pulis insists he is not concentrating on any specific targets for the end of the season.

“We are not looking anywhere else apart from Liverpool now,” he said. “I am desperately keen to get as many points as we can but we know what we are and what we have done and what we have achieved. The players this year have been fantastic.”

Although he’s currently frustrated with the finishing of his attacking players, Pulis has been hugely impressed with goalkeeper Ben Foster throughout this season.

Alongside Matt Phillips and Gareth McAuley, the Albion shot-stopper is one of the candidates for player of the season.

“Ben has been smashing and he's been fantastic for us all year,” said Pulis. “I was at Stoke with him when he was a young lad and he went to Man United. He was out on loan at Wrexham when Sir Alex brought him.

“This is only the second year he's played for me because he was out for 18 months with a knee injury.

“I can't really say he's better than this or that, but since he's come back from the injury he has been very good for us.”
