Gerry Francis: I'd back West Brom against any side

First-team coach Gerry Francis says he'd be 'optimistic' even if he was taking Albion to the Nou Camp to play Barcelona.

The Baggies are brimming with confidence after their stunning victory over Arsenal last time out, their first over a top seven club this season.

Next up is a trip to Old Trafford and provided all nine players come back from international duty this week in good condition, Francis fully expects Albion to test their hosts.

He says there's no use taking a negative attitude into any games, regardless of the opponent.

"Whether it's Manchester United or Manchester City, points are there," said Francis. "We've proven over the years we can beat the top teams.

"Whatever 11 they put out, it's going to be difficult, but whoever it is, you have to believe you can get something out of the game otherwise why are we there?

"If your players think 'it doesn't matter if we lose this', you're already defeated.

"You should always have that optimistic view, no matter who you're playing – even if it's away to Barcelona!"

Francis reckons the 3-1 victory over Arsenal has given the team the belief they can go to Old Trafford and turn over Jose Mourinho's team.

"When you beat big teams it does give you a bit of a lift," he said. "It doesn't give you the next three points. But winning gives everyone a lift, confidence is everything.

"Our performance against Arsenal with 23 per cent possession was exceptional. Our turnover and ability to break quickly was excellent."

Not that Albion will necessarily employ the same tactics against United as they did Arsenal.

"Every week you look at the opposition's strengths and weaknesses," said Francis. "Many teams we play have got better squads, better talent, so we have to work very hard during the week to utilise the situation where we can pick up points. Every week is different, every team is different.

"A lot of work goes in, which is why you want the players there, because we do do a lot of pattern-of-play work on the opposition."

However, Albion's team will be returning from international duty in dribs and drabs this week.

"Mostly what you do is keep your fingers crossed and hope everybody comes back ok," said Francis.
