Johnson, who scored six goals in 27 games last season, was an unused substitute in Walsall’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham City on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old missed the whole of pre-season and the opening four league matches but Sadler intends to carefully build up his minutes in order to get him back up to speed.
