Shane Lewis in frame for Walsall contract

Former West Brom goalkeeper Shane Lewis was today in pole position to become Walsall's second goalkeeper signing.

The 20-year-old is one of several goalkeepers who has been on trial at the Banks's Stadium during pre-season and has been invited back to train with the Saddlers this week.

Boss Dean Smith, who has already signed Richard O'Donnell this summer but has made adding a second keeper a priority, confirmed Lewis would be offered a deal if he impresses.

Smith said: "We have not yet made a decision but I have got Shane Lewis back in, he will be training with us this week so we will have another look and see how he does.

"We have had a number of different goalkeepers in but I want someone who is going to push Richard and Shane has been invited back.

"We liked him when he was first here so hopefully he can impress again." He added: "If Shane impresses, he will earn himself a contract."

Lewis, a regular for West Brom's reserves last season, featured for a Walsall side against Halesowen Town and also played in the 2-1 win over Kidderminster Harriers.

Smith and his coaching team have also run the rule over Tyrell Belford, who was released by Liverpool earlier this summer, along with former Villa shot-stopper Calum Barrett and Blackburn Rovers reserve Seb Usai.

O'Donnell, who looks certain to start the season as No 1, was also signed following a trial but first year professional Liam Roberts is the only other goalkeeper on the books.
