The striker’s goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth made him the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League.

But Watkins, who has netted 75 times in 182 top flight appearances since joining from Brentford, does not want to stop there and says his next target is bringing up a century.

He said: “What's next? To keep scoring goals. 100 Premier League goals, I think that puts you into another category.

“I am not too far off that, 25 more, that can happen in a season.”

Watkins, who outlined his desire to become the club’s top scorer in the Premier League in his first-ever interview with the club, surpassed Gabriel Agbonlahor in the scoring charts with Saturday’s goal.

The latter was among the first to pass on his congratulations, while former Villa stars including Christian Benteke, Dion Dublin and Juan Pablo Angel appeared in a club video paying tribute to the achievement.

Watkins also reiterated his desire to win a trophy with Villa, though he will have to wait for next year after last month’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace.

Their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, however, are very much alive after the win at Bournemouth.

Watkins said: “There are a lot of teams that are pushing for Champions League spots and it is going down to the wire.”

He added: “You know we were all disappointed in how we performed against Palace.

“We had been on an amazing run before that and such a big day for the club and us boys didn’t turn up.

“We hold our hands up for that but that is something we had our eyes on, me especially, this record and winning a trophy as well. It would have been the cream on the top for this season.”
