The on loan Manchester United star will undergo a scan later this week to assess the extent of the injury which forced him to miss Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace.

But the initial prognosis is he will miss several weeks and with the 27-year-old already unable to play in the last of Villa’s four remaining fixtures, away at parent club United, his campaign is thought to be over.

Villa host Fulham this Saturday before travelling to Bournemouth the following weekend. The club’s final home match of the season, at home to Tottenham on May 18, is thought to be the only match Rashford has a slim chance of making. Villa have objected to a request from Tottenham to bring the match forward three days.

Rashford has scored four goals in 17 appearances since joining Villa in the January transfer window. The club have paid a minimum 75 per cent of the England international’s £325,000-a-week wages during his loan stay.

Villa have an option to buy Rashford in the summer for £40million but are unlikely to make a decision on whether to activate the clause until the end of the season. It may well depend on the club securing Champions League qualification for the second successive campaign.

Rashford, who had been frozen out at United under Ruben Amorim, is believed to be keeping his options open and will not make a decision on his own future until June.
