Emi Martinez

Difficult to remember the Villa goalkeeper having to make a serious save. There, in a nutshell, is why Forest got nothing out of the game.

Solid 7

Andres Garcia

Played well enough before being replaced by Ezri Konsa at the break. Contributed to attacks, while his pace got Villa out of trouble.

Bright 6

Axel Disasi

Solid in the first half but looked far less sure of himself after moving to right-back. Will feel he should have blocked the cross for the goal.

Moved 6

Tyrone Mings

Continued his run of success when playing with a big performance. Villa do not lost when Mings starts and more often than not of late, they win.

Dominant 7

Ian Maatsen

Pound for pound his best performance in a Villa shirt. Set up the winner and caused a host of problems. Defended well too.

Energy 8

Amadou Onana

Started in the Premier League for the first time since January and delivered a real mixed bag. Needed to be more influential.

Mixed 6

Youri Tielemans

Was afforded acres of space by Forest in the first half and duly ran the game. Lovely pass for the opener.

Classy 7

Donyell Malen

It feels like it has been a breakthrough week for the Netherlands international. The goal was his most important contribution for Villa so far, for sure.

Goal 7

Marco Asensio

Some lovely touches, which you would expect, while he was also denied by Sels in the second half. At other times he ran into trouble.

Moments 6

Morgan Rogers

Up there with his finest performances for Villa. Took his goal superbly and then in the second half showed the kind of physicality needed to see the game out.

Bully 8

Ollie Watkins

An in-form Watkins would have caused havoc for a Forest team clearly off-key in the first half. But this was not an in-form Watkins.

Quiet 5

Substitutes

Ezri Konsa 7 (for Garcia, HT), Boubacar Kamara 7 (for Onana, 61), Marcus Rashford 6 (for Watkins, 61), Jacob Ramsey 7 (for Malen, 61), John McGinn 7 (for Asensio, 73) Subs not used: Cash, Torres, Digne, Olsen (gk).
