The verdict on Villa’s business over 34 days in January and early February will arrive in just a few months.

A hectic, sometimes seemingly chaotic window closed with six senior players departed and five arrived, including high-profile, heavyweight loan moves for Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio.

Above all else it screamed of manager Unai Emery’s need to win now, his refusal to let a season in which he has recently cut a frustrated figure peter out. There will be pressure on both the Spaniard and his players to deliver, after a window which was very much a statement of short-term intent.

While the signings of Rashford and Asensio, both completed within 48 hours of Monday night’s deadline, grabbed most of the attention, Villa’s business felt incomplete until the arrival of Axel Disasi from Chelsea, a deal eventually confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
