The Scotland international sustained a hamstring injury early in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Leicester which Unai Emery fears will keep him out for at least a couple of weeks.
Celtic, who McGinn almost joined before moving to Villa in 2018, visit Villa Park on January 29 in the final Champions League group stage game.
McGinn’s injury was the one major blot on the afternoon for Villa who eeked out a win over the struggling Foxes courtesy of Leon Bailey’s first goal of the season.
The Jamaica international fired home with 14 minutes remaining after Stephy Mavididi had cancelled out Ross Barkley’s opener.
