Sergio Aguero opened the scoring at Wembley, as all of the game's goals came in the first half.

Controversy struck as City doubled their lead, with a corner awarded despite video replays showing that Villa should have in fact won a goal kick after Grealish's challenge near the byline sent the ball into an opposing player before running out of play.

Rodri headed home from the resulting corner though, as Villa looked liable to suffer a heavy defeat.

Mbwana Samatta struck back to offer a lifeline though before the half was out with a brilliant diving header off Anwar El Ghazi's cross.

Despite a hearty second half performance, culminating in Bjorn Engels' header being tipped onto the post late on, City secured their deserved success, claiming their third successive Carabao Cup trophy.
