O'Neill took charge of Villa between 2006 and 2010, leading the club to one of it's most successful spells in recent memory, guiding them to three straight sixth-placed finishes in the Premier League.

The 66-year-old, who has also had spells at Sunderland, Leicester and Celtic, had been under increased pressure following Ireland's disappointing Nations League campaign which included a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Wales in September.

Their failure in the inaugural year of the competition has seen Ireland relegated into Nations League C.

He had previously claimed that he wanted to remain in his role following the goalless draw with Denmark earlier this week. He had failed to secure a competitive win for Ireland over the course of the calendar year.

O'Neill had been at the helm since 2013, leading the country to the last 16 of Euro 2016, and stands down by mutual consent after a disappointing UEFA Nations League campaign.

Assistant Roy Keane and O'Neill's other backroom staff have also left their roles.

The Football Association of Ireland president Donal Conway said on the association's official website: "On behalf of the FAI Board, I would like to thank Martin, Roy, and the management team for their work with the Republic of Ireland team over the last five years."

Ex-Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is the early favourite to take over from O'Neill.
