The 30-year-old started the first league game of the season against the Tigers, which Villa won 3-1, getting himself on the score sheet.

Steve Bruce has since preferred to utilise midfielder Mile Jedinak in his place following the opener, with the former Bournemouth skipper restricted to appearances in the Carabao Cup.

His departure leaves James Chester, Axel Tuanzebe and forgotten man Micah Richards as the only recognised senior centre-halves in the squad, following the departures of Chris Samba and John Terry.

Bruce has confirmed his desire to play Jedinak in the position, whilst James Bree also featured there during the defeat to Burton in mid-week.

Villa are still keen on bringing players into Villa Park before today's loan deadline, with Bruce hopeful of securing the signing of Tammy Abraham from Chelsea.

French centre-back Harould Moukoudi was in Birmingham for talks with Steve Bruce yesterday, but a move now appears unlikely with the 20-year-old likely to stay at Le Havre.

Meanwhile, former Villa loanee Josh Onomah has joined Sheffield Wednesday on-loan from Spurs.
