Aston Villa 2 Wolves 1 - October 30 2019

You need only go back less than a fortnight to find the last time Wolves and Villa met - albeit in a game which will likely vary massively compared to this encounter.

Wolves travelled to Villa Park with a squad boasting very little experience, with the likes of Chem Campbell, Taylor Perry, Dion Sanderson and Max Kilman all starting for Nuno's side.

Villa themselves made numerous changes for the cup clash, but dominated possession and deservedly left 2-1 winners.

Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady, either side of Patrick Cutrone's strike, proved the difference at B6.

The win earned Villa a place in the quarter-finals of the competition, facing Liverpool next month, with the Reds likely to play a weakened side due to their Club World Cup commitments in Qatar just a day later.

Wolves' youngsters could leave Villa Park that night with their heads held high, but you can picture two very different teams going head to head on Sunday.

Aston Villa 4 Wolves 1 - March 10 2018

Not a day many Wolves fans will look back on fondly.

The then-Championship leaders made the trip to B6 hoping to pick up another win in their incredible promotion season, but were instead soundly beaten by Steve Bruce's side 4-1.

Albert Adomah got the game going after he bundled home in the eighth minute - only for Diogo Jota to respond in the 20th minute with a similarly scrappy effort from Matt Doherty's ball across goal.

The second half was to be Villa's though, with James Chester prodding the hosts ahead off a Robert Snodgrass free-kick, before Lewis Grabban fired home to double their advantage.

Wolves could consider themselves unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after Snodgrass seemed to block Ruben Neves' free kick with his arm, but Villa compounded the visitor's pains by adding a fourth just five minutes before the final whistle, after Birkir Bjarnason prodded home after bursting through midfield.

The win looked to have galvanised Villa, but they couldn't ride that momentum to challenge the top two, before ultimately failing in the play-off final to Fulham. Wolves went on to win the title in style to gain promotion.

Wolves 2 Aston Villa 0 - October 14 2017

It was a very different encounter at Molineux earlier that season, in a game which Wolves dominated from start to finish.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half, but Wolves had by far the better chances as Villa struggled to handle the hosts.

Diogo Jota eventually got Wolves the lead they deserved heading up to the hour mark with a brilliant strike to get Molineux rocking.

Leo Bonatini wrapped up the points from a tight angle following Alan Hutton's initial challenge. Only a miraculous double save from Sam Johnstone stopped Wolves from adding a third.

Robert Snodgrass did rattle the woodwork with a late free-kick, but the visitors were not deserving of a consolation - and Wolves fans left the happier as the whistle was blown, the game ending 2-0 in their side's favour.

The result put an exclamation point on Wolves' brilliant start to the season, whilst Villa left hurting having been beaten so soundly on the road by a local rival on the rise.

Wolves 1 Aston Villa 0 - January 14 2017

There was more success for Wolves at Molineux in an emotional encounter for both clubs in January 2017 - with the game taking place just two days after the sad passing of Graham Taylor, who had managed both clubs over his career.

Joe Mason got Wolves off to a great start after 15 minutes, firing home after Sam Johnstone's save fell straight to the striker.

Ross McCormack had a good chance to level before the break, but saw his header fly over the bar in a half the visitors would rather forget.

Neither side found another goal, but Bright Enobakhare did come close late on, but saw his shot fly wide after some good work in the penalty area from the hosts.

Villa's season went on to finish with no more than a whimper, with Steve Bruce calling out McCormack's attitude just over a week after the defeat.

Paul Lambert's Wolves finished two places below Villa that season, before the Scot was relieved of his duties and replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo in the summer.

Aston Villa 1 Wolves 1 - October 15 2016

It was a tale of two penalties at Villa Park in 2016 - although Walter Zenga's Wolves left much the unhappier of the two sides, who really should have beaten Villa in Steve Bruce's first game in charge of the club.

Villa got off to a good start under Bruce, after Dominic Iorfa tripped Jack Grealish in the box, allowing Jonathan Kodjia to fire home from the spot just 15 minutes into the game.

Aly Cissokho was rightly judged to have handled Helder Costa's attempt on goal in the area less than 20 minutes later to gift Wolves a leveller - with the winger stepping up and firing home past Pierluigi Gollini emphatically.

Wolves could have had another chance to score from the spot after Micah Richards' clumsy challenge on Jon Dadi Bodvarsson - but referee David Coote decided against pointing to the spot, despite clear contact between the two.

Carl Ikeme produced a fine save to stop Kodjia's superb volley, before the Ivorian ignored a brilliantly placed Ross McCormack to fire straight at the Nigerian stopper before half time.

Nouha Dicko blazed a chance over, before Ivan Cavaleiro had a golden opportunity to put Wolves ahead, only for Alan Hutton to block the forward's strike to keep things level.

The talk after the game was focused around Jack Grealish, who was subsequently banned for three games for a 'stamp' on then-midfielder Conor Coady in the first half. Coote had not seen the clash between the pair.
