A new study has reviewed the results of each of England’s 20 Premier League clubs during their opening day matches over the last decade finding that Wolves and Villa sit comfortably within the top ten in comparison to their top flight competitors.

Research from Betoclock.com found that Wolves sit just ahead of their local rivals with five wins in ten games, securing 18 points from their last ten opening day games.

Villa meanwhile also registered five wins from ten, but notched just 17 points from their last ten opening fixtures.

As you might expect, Manchester City top the pile of all Premier League sides, with the reigning champions having won nine of the last ten opening day games, drawing the other one.

Manchester United fill in at second place, with Chelsea earning the third spot on the podium. Watford are a surprise inclusion in the top four on the opening day table, having won five and drawn five of their last ten openers.

At the bottom of the table, Newcastle United and Norwich City have been historically slow starters, with Magpies losing six of their last 10 opening day fixtures, and the Canaries losing four. Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United boast the lowest goals tally on opening day fixtures, finding the net a measly six times each.

Of course, Wolves and Villa will have the chance to improve their position in the opening table this weekend, with Villa tackling a tough away trip to Spurs on Saturday, whilst Wolves take on Leicester Sunday.
