England fans travelling from Birmingham could pay nearly £9000 if they win the World Cup
England fans looking to travel to Russia for the World Cup from Birmingham will spend more than £8,500 doing so, research has found.
Research by MoneySuperMarket reveals just how much England fans should expect to be spending depending on how far Gareth Southgate's team progresses in the competition.
With England fans gearing up to follow their national team to the World Cup in Russia, MoneySuperMarket looked at flights, accommodation, travel insurance and various other expenses to discover how according to the research, fans looking to stay with England for the games against Tunisia, Panama and Belgium will need to be budgeting a minimum of £3,889, and that's before internal travel is factored into the equation.
If England are able to break the curse and reach the quarter final for the first time since 2006, fans will be spending a minimum of £6,211.
And, if the unthinkable should happen and England reach the final of the tournament, it’s the travelling fans who will feel the cost – with the overall spend rising to £8,763 per person travelling from the West Midlands.
Whilst you might consider this a high cost, Brummies actually get a cheap deal, with a typical flight to Russia from Birmingham costing roughly £416 this year. This comes as a stark contrast to the previous tournament in Brazil, which had an average price of £1,900 per person.
For a standard hotel, costs per night in Russia averaged at £240, which is higher than normal due to the tournament and is only really rivalled by the French Euros in 2016 - which cost £235 on average.
The average price of a match ticket at Russia 2018 are the highest for an international competition in the last decade, at £192 on average.
The research also found that England’s early exits from competitions this decade have saved travelling fans close to a staggering £20,000 each, assuming that they would have travelled to each Three Lions game at each tournament.
The estimated total cost of each tournament, including hotels, tickets and drinks would have totalled at least £19,604 on average if England had got through to the final.
