Travelling supporters took the masks to Villa Park after the word was spread online in response to criticism of Mendes' links to the club in the run up to the game.

However, the masks were removed by stewards as fans entered the ground.

West Midlands Police said the decision was made by ground staff, whom some Wolves fans accused of a sense of humour failure.

Wolves fan Sam said on Twitter: "I understand them needing to see fans' faces as they go into the ground, but don't confiscate, just ask politely to remove them while they enter the stadium."

Aston Villa WMPolice said on Twitter: "The Mendes mask decision is a club decision nothing to do with 'Birmingham plod'. Police will only get involved when there is a potential breach of the peace.

"It was not a police decision. Stewards we’re removing masks upon entry at turnstiles. Police were at turnstiles, as they are for all games, to ensure there was no breach of the peace."

The relationship between Wolves and Mendes was brought into greater focus last week when it emerged it was to be discussed by EFL bosses following complaints from rival Championship clubs.
