Garry Monk appointed Birmingham City manager

Garry Monk has been appointed at Birmingham City as manager, following Steve Cotterill's departure over the weekend.

Monk, formerly in charge at Middlesbrough, Leeds and Swansea joins Blues as they sit third from bottom in the Championship and in serious risk of relegation to League One.

He will be assisted at St. Andrew's by Pep Clotet, James Beattie and Darryl Flahavan, and joins on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Blues confirmed his arrival online and issued a statement welcoming the former defender to the club:

"The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Garry Monk as our new manager." read the statement.

"He will be assisted by Pep Clotet, James Beattie and Darryl Flahavan.

"Sean Rush joins Monk's backroom staff as Head of Performance and Ryan Needs comes in as head of analysis.

"The club is delighted to have secured the services of one of the game's brightest young managers in Monk, 38."

Monk's first task will be taking on former club, Middlesbrough, who travel to the Midlands on Tuesday.

Following that, Blues take on Cardiff, Hull and Ipswich.
