Four-midable Staffordshire take victory

Staffordshire were unbeaten in all four pairings as they got their first win of the new county darts season on the board.

Match victory on their own turf against Worcestershire came after opening their campaign with defeat at Surrey last month,

The hosts welcomed their visitors to the White Eagle Club in Riverway, Stafford, for their first home game of the schedule in the BDO British Inter-Counties Championship Division Two.

Play began for two days with the women's B teams first to the oche, playing out a 3-3 draw to produce a stalemate early on.

Sam Prommetta saved Staffordshire's line-up in the final game, top scoring with an average of 18.59 to see off Melissa Daly (17.05) in the last leg 3-2.

Nicola Ellis was the pick of Worcestershire's darters on the other side, racking up 18.33 in a 3-0 whitewash of Michelle Colclough (14.33).

Staffordshire got on top with the men's B clashes, where they prevailed 8-4. They took a 5-0 lead and never looked back.

Callum Matthews opened in style for them, notching 28.90 in a 3-0 shut-out of Paul Wallace (24.88).

The best response came at the last, Richard Cummings saving some face with 23.80 in a 3-1 defeat of Gary Whitby (23.83).

Staffordshire's promising position was cemented by a 5-1 victory from the women's A ties, where they were always in control.

Sarah Cope led the way with 20.35 in a 3-1 vanquishing of Zoe Jones (19.97). while Steph Konya (15.99 ) mustered Worcestershire's sole reply with a 3-0 landslide over Roz Harry (14.98).

Staffordshire could afford another draw, 6-6, in the men's A finale where Worcestershire needed a miracle to save the match.

A high-quality opener saw the home side's Andy Beardmore (27.45) prevail 4-1 against Mark Smith, who had the highest losing average of the weekend with 28.17.

Staffordshire's Martin Wheawall recorded the highest winning figures, with 30.58 for a 4-2 success over Liam Kelly (27.28).

Worcestershire's Ian MacKenzie produced the superior winning total of his ranks, with 26.86 from a 4-2 victory against Steven Shenton (23.93).

Staffordshire prevailed 25-14 overall, counting three extra points as the winning county. They next travel to Northamptonshire on the weekend of October 29-30.
