Hughes was part of the troupe that made the trip to Egmond Aan Zee in Holland to represent his country, writes Craig Birch.

Six titles were decided at the Hotel Zuiderduin with 'Yozza' claiming one partnering Glen Durrant, Scott Mitchell and James Hurrell.

The Black Country thrower also competed in the men's pairs and singles competitions, with Holland taking the overall accolade due to their position of top in the points table.

Hughes endured disappointment at the first hurdle in the singles, where he was pitted against Scotland's Ross Montgomery in Group Three. He won just a leg, going down 4-1.

Montgomery, who he defeated in the first round of this year's BDO World Championship, would come back to haunt him in the pairs.

Glen Durrant joined Hughes at the oche, while Montgomery was partnered by Alan Soutar. The Scots prevailed from their last 16 clash, again 4-1.

Hughes and Durrant had registered two victories to get that far in Group Two, first whitewashing French duo Cyril Blot and Thibault Tricole 4-0.

They then repeated the landslide verdict over Lithuanians Ugnius Jankunas and Osvaldas Ksanys to progress further.

Hughes, Durrant, Mitchell and Hurrell then took their places for the team clashes, where quartets played a leg each against the other four players until the first side reached nine victories.

England met Finland in the quarter-finals, where they eased through 9-2. Hughes featured three times, losing to Tatu Pehkonen before seeing off Asko Niskala and Ulf Ceder.

It set up a semi-final tie against Northern Ireland where England triumphed even more emphatically, 9-1. Hughes vanquished Peter Shaw, Kyle McKinstry and Neil Duff.

Success over Holland 9-6 in the final dented some of the Dutch momentum, with Hughes opening in style against Gino Vos.

The 30-year-old then downed Jeffrey Sparidaans and Wesley Harms, before a setback against Richard Veenstra as the hosts fought back. England got over the line with a game to spare.
