And Hughes proved the pick of Group Five as he came through what was supposed to be a 32-man field, receiving a bye past the last 512.

The 29-year-old thrower then downed fellow Englishman Shane Lowe 4-2, before whitewashing Belgium's own Frankie Engels 4-0.

He defeated Colin Roelofs 4-2 to come within a game of winning his board, which he did by ousting another Dutchman, Ryan de Vreede, by the same scoreline.

He pushed the formidable Martin Atkins close, too, in an encounter that went all of the way to the last leg, Atkins just seeing him off 4-3.

Wednesbury's Matthew Dicken also competed and reached the second round, after a bye past the opening phase. He was eliminated 4-1 by Mike van der Veen.
