The two throwers met in the last but one tie of the afternoon session at the Evenementenhal in Venray, in the opening half of first round ties.

Payne set out with a 177 and slung in five 180s over the course of the match, with Jones prevailing in three legs to six not telling the whole story.

He averaged 93.86 over the contest, a shade inferior to Payne's 94.73 as he did the double over Jones, beating him 6-2 in the Gibraltar Trophy of 2013.

He's back at the venue tomorrow to take on Stephen Bunting, who Jones has traded wins with in the Players Championship recently.
