Nick Fullwell is the pick in PDC Players events
West Midlands darters struggled on the floor at the weekend with Stourbridge's Nick Fullwell the pick of the bunch in a PDC Players Championship double.
Two tournaments were held at the K2 Centre in Crawley, one on Saturday and one yesterday, where Fullwell reached the third round and earned himself £500.
Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones and West Bromwich-born Steve Farmer were the only other two from the West Midlands to reach the money stages in either event.
Jones opened on Saturday by dropping just a leg in a 6-1 defeat of Gino Vos, only to then lose in the last and deciding leg to John Bowles in a see-saw second round tie.
'The Wanderer' is enduring a difficult year in non-televised competition and his luck didn't improve in yesterday's tournament, losing 6-5 in the first round to Tomas Seyler.
Farmer, meanwhile, had impressed in the first round on Saturday by defeating world No 18 Ronnie Baxter 6-4, only to then lose comprehensively, 6-2 to Terry Temple.
'The Train' then rolled into yesterday's event and made it to the second round by beating Joey Palfreyman 6-2, but he couldn't crack world No 19 Paul Nicholson and lost 6-4.
Fullwell went one better and had been picking up some results since Saturday, overcoming Darren Johnson 6-2 before being on the receiving end of a 6-3 loss to Adrian Gray.
Yesterday, 'the Hero' beat David Dodds 6-4 but was stretched to the last leg by Stephen Hardy before winning 6-5. World No 7 Wes Newton proved too much in a 6-2 defeat.
Rugeley's Mark Hylton has suffered his own fall from grace over the course of this year and it got no better for him at the weekend, losing in the first round of both tournaments.
'Mile High' - a former airline cabin crew manager - got short shrift out of Colin Lloyd in the first round on Saturday, exiting 6-1, before yesterday's 6-3 defeat to Stuart Kellett.
Brierley Hill's Mark Jones came home pot-less after failing to make it past the first hurdle, missing the money stages, starting with a 6-3 loss to Swede Magnus Caris on Saturday.
'Little Mon,' a self-employed plasterer, was back at the oche for yesterday's final tournament but fared little better, being on the receiving end of a last leg 6-5 defeat to Ross Smith.
Wednesbury's Matthew Dicken, a Youth Tour regular, went up against experience from the off when he was paired with 'the fastest player in the game,' Vincent van der Voort.
Dicken pulled back a couple of legs but couldn't match the pace of the Dutchman's swift throws and lost 6-2. The 20-year-old then lost 6-1 to Peter Wright, again in the first round.
Wright went all the way and won Saturday's tournament, beating Newton 6-1 in the final. Michael van Gerwen won yest's tournament, easing past Andy Hamilton 6-1 in the decider.
