Civic qualifier nets UK Open spots for darters

BDO player Robbie Green and three Black Country darters will go to the PDC UK Open after a qualifier hosted by tournament sponsors Speedy Services at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

World championship competitor Green, Wolverhampton's Dean Stewart, Halesowen's Michael Musto and Bilston duo Darrell Thorpe and Gavin Baker will play at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.

Former world champion Keith Deller and his son Matt, 21, failed to make it past the 16 dart challenge after clocking up scores of 353 and 269, respectively, with the selected amount of arrows.

'Kong' Green, from Liverpool, beat Jordan Johnston 2-0 last night in the best of three legs format to secure a return to the tournament where he reached the quarter-finals in 2006.

Stewart, 43, beat Ricky Nathan 2-1 to secure a spot at the UK Open for a fourth successive year, losing 9-3 to Denis Ovens in the third run of his last run in 2012.

Musto, a 41-year-old IT technician, whitewashed Andrew Bray 2-0 while Thorpe did the same to Glen Cullen, who hit the best 16-dart score of 578 during the first task.

Bilston compatriot Baker will join them after another whitewash, 2-0 over Dan Elcock. Birmingham's Matt Gallett, Robbie Pennington and Jake Singleton to join them.

Wins over Neil Wild, Jim Esley and Stuart Gilmour by 2-0, 2-1 and 2-0 respectively secured their places. East Park's Wild hit the second top score of 540 with his 16 darts.

The 128-man UK Open starts for three days from June 8, live on Sky Sports.
