The Rowley Regis middleweight, fighting for the first time since losing his European title inside two rounds to Hamzah Sheeraz last September, put in a mature performance against the eager and rather eccentric Ghanaian at BP Pulse Live on Sunday night.

Denny put his opponent on the floor in the seventh round and the victory, 97-92 on the scorecard of referee Chris Dean, was much to the delight of his three eldest children who came to watch their dad in action for the first time.

The 33-year-old, who was also backed by more than 600 fans, told the Express & Star: “It was a special moment. They have been badgering me to come for ages, so we’ve ticked that box now.

“On the other hand, maybe they are a good luck charm! I thought I boxed well.

“To be honest I forgot they were there when the fight was happening. I just blanked it all out so I didn’t have to worry about it. But I am glad they were there and got to witness it. It is a great memory.”

Daughter Luna, 11, who watched the bout alongside 13-year-old sister Cader and nine-year-old brother Baine, told Sky Sports she rated her dad’s performance 11 out of 10.

Denny later quipped: “I think she is after some money!”

On a more serious note, the former plumber fears he may be kept waiting again on a British title shot after Gerome Warburton and Kieron Conway battle for the Lonsdale belt next month.

Despite previously holding the English and then European crowns, Denny has consistently been overlooked for the British.

He said: “Whoever wins next month will get a voluntary defence and I don’t think many people would pick me as a voluntary.

“We’ll see what happens. I try not to get involved too much because it is out of your control.

“You can get your hopes up and then they pick someone else. I just want to fight the biggest and best people out there and give the fans what they want to see.

“I’m going to get hold of (promoter) Ben Shalom and grill him in a bit to see what he has lined up for me.”

Denny’s win capped an excellent night for Wednesbury’s BCB Promotions, who saw welterweight Elliott Whale extend his perfect record after Troy Coleman defended his Midlands Area middleweight title in dramatic fashion against Bradley Goldsmith.

Burntwood’s Coleman looked close to being stopped in the sixth round only for one brilliant straight right-hand to change the course of the fight. #

Instead, it was Coventry’s Goldsmith who was on the ropes when referee Chris Dean stepped in midway through round seven.
