Sam Eggington eyes world title shot
Sam Eggington is inching closer to a world title shot after securing a bout for the vacant WBC Silver Middleweight Championship.
The Stourbridge boxer will face former world champion Carlos Molina for the strap as he bids to take his career to the next level.
After losing his IBF International Super-Welterweight title to Ted Cheeseman in a tight decision, Eggington bounced back in December when he stopped experienced fighter Ashley Theophane.
The 27-year-old is now back on the right path in search of a full world title and he believes securing the silver belt will push him closer to realising his dream.
He said: “There’s nothing like a hard Mexican fighter to really get the blood and adrenaline pumping and I can’t wait for this one.
“Molina is very experienced, he’s a former world champion, he’s fought everyone and he’s still hungry and ambitious for another world title fight.
“I like the danger that he brings to the ring which will bring the savage out in me.
“I’m very close to my own world title fight and I can’t and won’t let Molina wreck that, so I’ll be going all out on him and if the knockout or stoppage comes and I’m the first man to do it to him, then that’s a bonus.”
The pair will headline the Hennessy Sports event on May 22 at the Coventry Skydome Arena.
The nine-fight card is being broadcast live on Channel 5.
Eggington, who boasts a 29-7 professional record, is also moving up in weight for the clash with Molina.
Having previously fought at super-welterweight, he has moved up 6lbs to middleweight.
Molina, now aged 37, has never been stopped in his 11 losses and is currently on an eight-fight winning streak.
He won his IBF world title in 2013, defeating Ishe Smith and he has fought several big names throughout his career, including Cory Spinks and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Molina said: “This is a great test for me and I’m looking forward to being the new WBC Silver Champion.”
