World title on line in Rachel Ball rematch
Rachel Ball finally has her world title opportunity as she faces a rematch with Shannon Courtenay.
The Aldridge fighter was due to fight Ebanie Bridges for the vacant WBA bantamweight world title in November, before the Australian withdrew with an arm injury.
At short notice Jorgelina Guanini stepped in, but the Argentinian had issues making weight and the bout was moved up to super-bantamweight for the interim WBC world title.
Ball made light work of Guanini over 10 rounds, dominating the proceedings, and has had her eye on the WBA title this year.
Now, Ball will face a rematch with Courtenay on the undercard to Conor Benn against Samuel Vargas on April 10.
Ball had her breakthrough moment as a Matchroom Boxing fighter in August when she won a narrow points victory over Courtenay, handing her the first loss of her career.
In the eight-round battle, Ball dropped Courtenay in the opening two minutes in an entertaining bout.
Now, the 29-year-old has her chance for a full world title after achieving three in kick-boxing.
Courtenay, who felt she did not deserve the decision loss to Ball in their first bout, returned to winning ways in December with a spectacular knockout win over Polish fighter Dorota Norek.
The rematch with Ball was originally due to take place on February 13 but was pushed back to April.
Courtenay is still fighting next month, with her opponent yet to be announced, despite having a date set for the world title clash with Ball. Although February’s fight is expected to be a straightforward part of Courtenay’s preparations for the rematch, it remains to be seen whether a loss next month will effect April’s fight.
Ball’s return to the ring was part of Matchroom Boxing announcement that sees five shows held across February, March and April. It includes the rematch between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin on March 6.
