Conah Walker is ready to take the next step up ladder
Wolverhampton hopeful Conah Walker is looking to make the Midlands Area title a stepping stone to bigger things in his boxing career.
The 25-year-old will take the welterweight strap tomorrow if he overcomes Birmingham fighter Kaisee Benjamin.
Walker, who has an undefeated record of seven wins and one draw, is in good form as he aims to make a name for himself in the sport – with the Midlands title his first goal.
“I’m proud to be from Wolverhampton and I have a lot of support from there,” he told the Express & Star. “It’s a first step moving towards bigger things, but it’s one that I’m looking forward to getting.
“Being the best in the Midlands, and having it in Wolverhampton is a bonus.
“Considering what is going on, I’ve had a really good camp to be fair.
“I’ve had some good sparring and I’m feeling as fit as I’ve ever been to be honest.
“It didn’t get full notice for the camp, but I was ticking over in the gym anyway and just waiting by the phone for the call.
“In terms of Covid, as soon as we said we could get back into the gym I was back with the lads. I haven’t found it too difficult and I’m feeling good.”
Benjamin also finds himself in good form, having made two defences of his title and seeing off three undefeated boxers in his last four bouts.
The champion has a record of 10 wins, one loss and one draw, but despite having more experience Walker believes he can overcome the challenge and walk away with the belt.
The fight has been put together by Hennessy Sports as part of an event that sees boxing return to free-to-air television, on Channel 5. No crowds will be allowed and there will be strict safety precautions, but Walker is prepared to take his chance in front of a TV audience.
“I’m buzzing for it, there’ll be a few people watching and it should be fun, I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
