Fab four aiming to box clever
Four young Dudley boxers have their sights set on national glory, writes Nick Elwell.
Brooklands duo Kian McDermott and James Willis, and Lions BC pair Osama Mohamed and Ben Collins are making impressive progress in the NAGBC’s Championships.
Willis, Mohamed and Collins will all step into the ring at the Triumph Club in Coventry on Sunday, while McDermott can take a welcome break after being handed a bye through to the quarter-finals the following weekend.
Willis takes on Corby Brown from Boston BC at 66kg, Mohamed meets Uzair Rashid (Earl Shilton) at 57kg and Collins lines up against Jack Smith (Bad Boyz) at 70kg.
“James and Kian have boxed really well to make it through to this stage,” said Brooklands coach Darren McDermott.
“Competitions such as this are great experience for them and hopefully they can progress further. It would be great if we could have two national champions.
“James will be in action again on Sunday, but Kian has been handed a bye, which is welcome because he has had four fights in the last two weeks.”
Lions BC star Mohamed will be looking to add to his title haul after being crowned champion in the Junior Cadet 54kg category at the National Junior Championships in Rotherham in March and then winning gold at July’s Monkstown Cup in Ireland.
The Brierley Hill-based club are in good form at the moment having seen Tom Jones lift the All England National Development title at 57kg last month.

Osama Mohamed and ben Collins both got byes yesterday and will box versus East Midlands, matthew ford beat Hamza Mir and will box Kian McDermott on wednesday in Coventry, Ricco Southall lost on a split decision in a close bout to Charlie Gaffy from Hall Green, any more info give me a call
