Tommy Langford bags comeback victory
‘Baggies Bomber’ Tommy Langford admitted a few nerves as he made the step-up to super-middleweight in his comeback fight.
Langford – making his first ring return since being beaten twice by fellow Albion fan Jason Welborn in the middleweight division last year – emerged victorious with a points decision over against Frenchman Baptiste Castegnaro, writes Christian Hile.
The 29-year-old made hard work of his opponent, defeating him narrowly on the judges’ cards 58-56. Langford admitted he had to work off a little ring rust, as he hadn’t fought since his last defeat to Welborn in September.
He said: “It was to be expected, after the lay off and moving up a weight division, but I warmed into it, and started to box well”.
The former British middleweight champion believes the fight against the tough Frenchman will help him long term. “He was a strong, durable opponent, so the experience will be invaluable as I push on to bigger fights.”
Langford now hopes Saturday’s victory at Walsall Town Hall will catapult him into the bigger fights.
“It means the questions that I’ve had have been answered, and I’m happy to push on now, and look for bigger opportunities at 168Ib,” he added.
