And the 23-year-old from Stourbridge could be off to Vegas to fight Danny Garcia this year, if mentor Barry Hearn gets his way.

Eggington, who had previously stopped Frankie Gavin and Paulie Malignaggi, sent Rodriguez through the ropes in the 10th round after landing two left hooks.

Hearn said after Saturday’s fight: “I want a European defence in maybe September and then Danny Garcia in Vegas with him after that.

“If Danny’s half a man let him pick up the phone because we’ll go to Vegas late this year.

“If not we’ll fight any other welterweight world champion.

“But there’s no rush because Sam’s 23 and he’s going to be around for years.”
