Aston Villa's Emi Martinez scoops major Premier League prize
Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has won the Premier League’s save of the season award.
Martinez’s stunning reaction stop to keep out Nicolas Dominguez’s header in last December’s match at Nottingham Forest won the most votes combined from the public and a panel of football experts.
It is the first time the Argentina international, who has twice won the Lev Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper in the world, has won the Premier League prize.
Dominguez looked certain to score when he headed toward goal but Martinez showed incredible reflexes to claw it off the line.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp described the keeper as being “like a magician”.
He said: “I can't think of a better Premier League save in my life. He has already got himself in a position where he is trying to get space for himself and then somehow he reacts.
"We talk about the Pele one from Gordon Banks. Somehow he saved it. It's almost like a magician, sleight of hand. That is truly sensational.”
While Martinez took huge plaudits on the night, Villa went on to lose the match 2-1 after conceding two late goals.
Jhon Duran, who put them ahead on the night, was nominated for the Premier League goal of the season award for his long-range strike against Everton.
But the Colombia international, who moved to Al-Nassr in January for a fee which could eventually top £70million, lost out to Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush.
